Cleaning and Sanitation

  • Are areas clean and surfaces, rugs, furniture and toys in good condition?
   
  • Are spills wiped up immediately?
   
  • Does the program have a regular cleaning schedule for the facility and equipment?
   
  • Are caregivers trained on proper cleaning and sanitizing, including handling blood and other body fluids?
   
  • Do you observe caregivers applying sanitizing solution properly?
   
  • Are cleaning supplies locked away and out of children's reach?
   

Diapering

Yes    No 
  • Is the place where diapers are changed clean, smooth without cracks?
   
  • Does the caregiver always keep a hand on the child while diapering?
   
  • Does the caregiver remove the soiled diaper without dirtying any surface not already in contact with stool or urine?
   
  • Does the caregiver clean and sanitize the surface after finishing the changing process?
   
  • Are diapers and diapering supplies brought to the changing table prior to bringing the child so that a child is not left alone on the changing table at any time?
   
  • Are diapers checked for wetness and feces at least hourly, and visually inspected at least every two hours, and whenever the child shows behavior that suggests a soiled or wet diaper?
   

Food Preparation

  • Do staff and children wash hands carefully before handling food?
   
  • Are the food preparation and food storage areas, tools, supplies and linens kept clean and sanitary?
   
  • Is the food preparation area separate from eating, laundry, toileting, and diapering areas?

    Hint: Drop in right before (or after) lunch, ask to observe the activity in the kitchen.
   

Handwashing

Yes    No 
  • Do all caregivers and children wash their hands often, especially before eating and after using the bathroom or changing diapers?

    Hint: Hands should be scrubbed with soap and water for at least 10 seconds and then rinsed and dried. The water faucet should be turned off with a paper towel.
